In the spring of 2005, Maureen and I took a course on building a log home in one of the classic, traditional styles of construction: the Butt-and-Pass (B&P) method, as taught by the Log Home Builders' Association of North America. The plan is to build Maureen's mom a new house... right now she lives in a 25-year-old kind of run-down double-wide manufactured house. (Not a trailer - it doesn't have wheels - but it arrived on a flatbed truck, and got moved onto a crawlspace foundation). It has all the HVAC, electrical, environmental, and every other kind of problem you'd expect from a house like that. And rather than pouring money into trying to repair what was never meant to last... we're going to build a new one from scratch, and build it to last.
Follow along here for a step-by-step summary of how it all comes together!
In the meantime I've been working on a bunch of repairs or upgrades to make the current place more liveable - you can see them in the repairs and upgrades track if you like. But as I said above, the main thrust of the effort is to replace the old house with an entirely new one, which will be much better, and last a lot longer.
As I do more work on this project, I'll continue to build out the pages and add more information about what's going on. I hope you visit often and find this interesting and exciting!
